The Guest
I’ve been enjoying the company of a pair of Red-Breasted Nuthatches, both male. One of the pair lets me stand beside him while feeding on suet.
He’s a busy boy.
I’m a curious gal.
He’s quick.
I’m slow.
The seed.
The suet.
The mix upon the ground.
He tilts his head.
This is good stuff.
Me standing still.
Do you want more?
A fleeting glance.
That would be nice.
Who is the guest?
Him or me?

I love nuthatches. The way they climb upside down on a tree trunk without a care in the world. And how secure they are at suet feeders! Thanks for the great photo.

You’re welcome. Another bird I enjoy is the Brown Creeper but I’ve not seen one here in NH., Michigan and Wisconsin.

Thanks, Laura. It feels good to hear this from you as your writing skills are far more refined than mine.

Thanks, and what’s funny about this one is that the words just came. I hadn’t planned on anything and then there it was in about 5 minutes.

This my first blog comment–ever. I especially appreciate your last two intertwining questions. Giant existential questions–which have no answer, but is lie at the heart of who we are–or aren’t as human beings.

Thank you for taking the time to comment. You have summed up my words with a few simple ones. Yet, how complex they are.
